Starfield Ship Building Master Guide: Best Ships, Modules & Combat Tactics
The Settled Systems span over 1,000 planets. Your ship is your home, your weapon, and your escape. Whether you're smuggling contraband past UC patrols or dogfighting Crimson Fleet pirates in the Serpentis system, this guide covers every bolt, reactor, and weapon hardpoint.

I. Ship Building Fundamentals
Every ship consists of mandatory components: Reactor (power generation), Grav Drive (jump range), Engines (speed/maneuverability), Shield Generator (defense), and Weapons (three hardpoint groups). The key trade-off is mass vs. mobility—every module adds mass, and heavier ships turn slower.
| Component | Best-in-Class | Location | Key Stat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactor | SF40 Sheared Flow | Stroud-Eklund Staryard | 40 Power (Class C) |
| Grav Drive | J-52 Gamma | Deimos Staryard | 50 LY Range |
| Engines | SAL-6830 | Slayton Aerospace | 180 Top Speed / 100 Mobility |
| Shield | Vanguard Bulwark | UC Vanguard quest reward | 1,450 Shield HP |
II. Best Ship Builds by Role
The Bounty Hunter (Combat-Focused)
Reactor: SF40 | Weapons: 6x Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojectors (Particle), 4x PBO-175 Auto Helion Beams, 4x Atlatl 280C Missiles
Result: Melts enemy shields in 2 seconds, hull in 3. Turns like a fighter despite Class C reactor.
The Long Hauler (Cargo/Trade)
Reactor: Pinch 8Z | Cargo: 6x Galleon S204 (8,880 total) | Shield: Assurance SG-1800
Result: Carries 40,000+ kg of cargo with enough shielding to escape any pirate ambush.
III. Ship Combat: Advanced Tactics
Power Management: The single most important skill. Full power to shields while under fire, redistribute to weapons during attack runs, and keep 1-2 pips in engines for emergency boosting. Bind power allocation keys for instant switching.
Targeting System: Focus fire on enemy grav drives first—a disabled enemy can't escape, letting you board and commandeer their ship. Boarding sells for 3-5x the value of destroying.
Class C vs Class A: Class C ships have the most firepower but slowest turns. Class A fighters can out-turn anything. The meta favors Class B as the sweet spot—outfit a Class B reactor with top-tier particle beams and you'll dominate.
