Quick Answer: When to Buy vs. Save
| Your Credits | Team's Credits | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 3900+ | Most teammates 3900+ | Full Buy: rifle + heavy shield + utility |
| 2000-3800 | Most teammates 2000-3800 | Force Buy: Spectre/Bulldog + light/heavy shield + partial utility. Only if winning the round matters (match point, last round of half). |
| Below 2000 | Most teammates below 3900 | Eco / Save: Buy nothing (or minimal: Classic + light shield). Full save for next round. |
| 4500+ | Teammates varied | Drop weapons to teammates who can't afford rifles. Better to have 4 rifles + 1 eco than 1 rifle + 4 classics. |
Economy management wins more rounds than aim in Valorant. A team with coordinated economy can take three full-buy rounds in a row; a team that force-buys every round leaves itself permanently under-equipped. This guide covers the credit system, round types, Pistol Round strategy, and how to coordinate team economy — even in solo queue.

How Credits Work
Every player starts the game with 800 credits. You earn credits at the end of each round:
| Outcome | Credits Earned |
|---|---|
| Round Win | 3000 |
| Round Loss | 1900 |
| Consecutive Loss Bonus (2nd loss in a row) | +500 (2400 total) |
| Consecutive Loss Bonus (3rd+ loss in a row) | +1000 (2900 total, caps here) |
| Kill Bonus | +200 per kill |
| Spike Plant (attackers) | +300 (to each attacker, whether round is won or lost) |
Maximum credits: 9000. You cannot exceed this cap, so sitting at 9000 and not buying is wasting potential economy.
The Four Round Types
1. Full Buy (Rifle Round)
Goal: Max out your loadout. Rifle (Vandal/Phantom, 2900), Heavy Shields (1000), and full utility (400-800 depending on agent). Total: ~4700-5100 credits.
When: You and your teammates all have 3900+ credits. This is your strongest round — play to win.
2. Eco / Save Round
Goal: Spend as little as possible to maximize credits for the next round. Buy nothing, or Classic + light shields (400 credits) at most. Your objective is to damage the enemy's economy (make them rebuy shields, break their utility) even if you lose the round.
When: You have fewer than 2000 credits and the team agrees to save. Key rule: if the team saves, everyone saves. One player buying a Spectre on an eco round ruins the next full-buy round for themself and possibly the entire team.
3. Force Buy
Goal: Spend all your credits right now because winning this round is critical. Buy the best you can afford (Spectre/Marshal + light/heavy shields + partial utility).
When: Match point (you need 1 round to win), last round of the half, or your team's economy is broken and you need to break the enemy's momentum. Force buys are high-risk — if you lose, you'll be on eco for the next 2+ rounds. Never force buy when you can full save for a rifle round next round.
4. Bonus Round
Goal: Win the round after pistol with SMGs/shotguns you bought in Round 2, WITHOUT buying rifles. If you win the bonus round, your economy snowballs and the enemy is crushed economically.
When: Round 3, after winning pistol and Round 2. You have SMGs/shotguns from Round 2. Don't rebuy — play the bonus with your existing guns. If you lose, you can full buy Round 4. If you win the bonus, you've crippled the enemy economy.
Pistol Round Strategy
The Pistol Round (Round 1) sets the economic tone for the entire half. Win pistol, and you have a massive economic advantage for the next 3+ rounds.
| Buy | Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light Shields (Regen Shield) | 400 | Survivability. You can tank more shots in pistol duels. Most common buy. |
| Ghost + no shields | 500 | One-tap headshot potential at all ranges. High-risk, high-reward. |
| Frenzy + light shields | 450+400=850 (not possible) | Impossible — you start with 800. Frenzy alone (450) leaves 350 for utility. |
| Classic + full utility + light shields | 0+500+400=900 (not possible) | Not enough credits. Pick utility (e.g., Sova drone 400) OR light shields. |
| Classic + right-click + light shields | 400 | Classic right-click burst is lethal at close range. Left-click for long range. Save remaining 400. |
Pistol round win → Round 2 buy: Light buy (Spectre + light shields, ~2100 credits). Opponents who lost pistol will be on eco. Do not buy a rifle — if you die and drop a Vandal, you gift the enemy a free rifle.
Pistol round loss → Round 2: Full save. Buy nothing. You'll have full-buy credits for Round 3.
The Economic Flow
Understanding the standard economic cadence prevents the most common low-rank mistake: force-buying every round and being permanently broke.
- Round 1 (Pistol): 800 credits. Light shields + Classic ability use.
- Round 2 (Win Pistol): Spectre/Marshal + light shields. Opponents eco.
- Round 3 (Bonus): Keep Round 2 weapons. If you win, opponent economy is broken for the half. If you lose, full buy Round 4.
- Round 4+: Alternating full buy / eco cycles. Lose a full buy → eco one round → full buy next round. Win a full buy → keep rifles (don't rebuy) until you die.
Team Economy Coordination
In solo queue: Press Tab to check teammate credits at the start of each buy phase. If 3 teammates have 2000 credits and you have 4500, you can either: (a) drop them rifles while you buy a Spectre for yourself, or (b) call for a team save. Never be the only player full-buying while your team saves — you'll lose the round AND waste 5000+ credits.
Dropping weapons: If you have excess credits (6000+), buy rifles for teammates. A Vandal costs 2900 — that's one round's loss bonus. Having 3 rifles + 2 SMGs is far better than 1 Operator + 4 Classics. Drop before you buy your own gun to avoid accidentally buying for yourself.
Calling saves: Use voice or chat to coordinate. "Eco this round, full buy next" is the most valuable call you can make below Diamond. A team that saves together wins together.
Common Economy Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It's Bad | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a rifle after winning pistol | If you die, you drop a free rifle to the enemy. They now have a gun advantage in a round they should be losing. | Buy Spectre/Marshal + light shields Round 2. Upgrade to rifle Round 4 if you lost the bonus. |
| Force-buying every round | You're perpetually at 0 credits, always under-equipped. A single loss chains into 3+ lost rounds. | Recognize when you can't afford a full buy and commit to a save. One save round = two full buy rounds. |
| Not checking teammate credits | You buy a Vandal while your teammates have classics. You lose the round anyway. | Press Tab every buy phase. Match your buy to the team's economy, not just your own. |
| Rebuying shields at 40+ armor | Heavy shields cost 1000. If you're at 40+ armor, you're wasting up to 600 credits for 10-20 armor points. | Only rebuy shields when below 25 armor. The math rarely supports rebuying over saving. |
| Holding 9000 credits | Credits above 9000 are lost. If you're at 9000 and your teammate has 3000, drop them a rifle. | Always spend down from 9000 before the cap wastes your income. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I ever buy light shields instead of heavy shields?
A: Yes, on eco rounds or when you can't afford heavy shields after buying a rifle. Light shields (400 credits) absorb 25 damage; heavy shields (1000 credits) absorb 50. The 600-credit difference is one full ability. If you buy a Vandal (2900) with 3900 credits, you can't afford heavy shields — light shields are better than no shields. On eco rounds with a Marshal, light shields are fine since you're playing long range.
Q: When should I buy the Operator?
A: The Operator costs 4700 credits. You should only buy it when: (1) Your team is winning and you have a credit surplus (6000+), (2) You're on defense on an Operator-friendly map (Breeze, Icebox, Haven C-long), and (3) Your aim with the OP is actually good. Buying an OP when you can't afford heavy shields is throwing — you'll die to one body shot and give the enemy a free Operator.
Q: What's the difference between a save and an eco?
A: They're often used interchangeably, but technically: "Save" means you're saving a specific weapon (e.g., saving your Operator for next round by not peeking). "Eco" means you're spending minimally (Classic + light shields at most) to maximize credits for next round. An eco is always a save; a save isn't always an eco (you could save a rifle without being on eco).
Q: Can I force buy if I'm the only one with credits?
A: Generally no. If you force-buy a Vandal and your teammates have Classics, you'll likely lose the round and waste 2900+ credits. The exception: if you can drop weapons for at least 2 teammates, turning a 1-rifle situation into a 3-rifle situation, then it's worth considering. But "I'll carry with a rifle while they eco" is wishful thinking.
Q: Does the Spike Plant bonus change eco decisions?
A: Yes. If attackers plant the spike but lose the round, each attacker gets +300 plant bonus on top of the 1900 loss bonus = 2200 minimum. This accelerates the attacker economy and lets them full-buy a round earlier than defenders would. If you're attacking and your team can get the plant down, prioritize it even on eco rounds — the extra 300 credits per player adds up fast.
