Understanding World Height Post-1.18

The world now extends from Y=-64 (bedrock floor) to Y=320 (build height). Deepslate replaces stone below Y=0. Ores below Y=0 generate as deepslate variants (deepslate diamond ore, etc.) which take longer to mine. Key height ranges:

  • Y=320 to Y=257: Above mountains; mostly air
  • Y=256 to Y=63: Surface and mountain terrain; stone, coal, iron, copper, emerald
  • Y=62 to Y=0: Sea level to deepslate transition; mixed stone/deepslate
  • Y=-1 to Y=-64: Deepslate layer; diamonds, redstone, gold, lapis

Diamond Ore

Best level: Y=-58 (mine at Y=-57 for eye-level). Diamond generation increases the deeper you go. The lower the Y-level, the more diamonds — with one catch: below Y=-58, bedrock starts appearing and eats into ore spawns. Y=-58 is the sweet spot where diamond density is highest before bedrock interference becomes significant.

  • Diamonds generate in blobs of 1-8 (smaller than pre-1.18)
  • Reduced air exposure means diamonds are less likely to be visible from cave walls — strip mining is more effective than caving for diamonds
  • Use a Fortune III pickaxe: Fortune III averages ~2.2 diamonds per ore block
Pro Tip: Dig a 2x1 tunnel at Y=-57 with branches every 3 blocks (not 2 — the 1.18 blob sizes are small enough that 3-block spacing covers them without overlap waste). Bring water buckets to deal with the frequent lava pools at this depth.

Ancient Debris (Netherite)

Best level: Y=15 in the Nether. Ancient debris generates only in the Nether, exclusively below Y=22, with peak concentration at Y=15. Each ancient debris block smelts into 1 netherite scrap; 4 scrap + 4 gold ingots = 1 netherite ingot.

  • Never generates exposed to air — always encased in netherrack or blackstone
  • Blast resistant: TNT and bed mining are the most efficient collection methods
  • Average 1-3 ancient debris per chunk (16x16 area); full netherite gear requires 16 ancient debris
NEEDS VERIFICATION: Exact ancient debris spawn rates per chunk can vary between Java and Bedrock editions. The Y=15 peak is consistent across both, but some community testing suggests Bedrock may have slightly different vein generation patterns. Assume ~1.7 debris per chunk on average as a safe estimate.

Iron Ore

Best levels: Y=16 and Y=232. Iron has a bimodal distribution — it generates at all Y-levels but peaks in two bands: one just above the deepslate transition (Y=16, good for early-game strip mining) and one high in mountains (Y=232, exposed on cliff faces).

Coal Ore

Best level: Y=96. Coal is the most abundant ore and generates at all Y-levels, but peak density is at Y=96 (mid-mountain). Coal is also heavily exposed on mountain surfaces and in caves. Reduced air exposure below Y=0 means you'll find far less coal in the deepslate layer — stock up before heading deep.

Copper Ore

Best level: Y=48. Copper generates most heavily in dripstone caves biomes (Y=48 is the center of dripstone cave generation). Outside dripstone caves, copper is still common from Y=-16 to Y=112. Copper ore veins can be massive — a single connected vein can yield multiple stacks of raw copper. Use a Fortune pickaxe for maximum raw copper drops.

Gold Ore

Best level: Y=-16 (general); Y=32-79 in Badlands. Standard gold generation peaks in the deepslate layer around Y=-16. However, the Badlands (Mesa) biome has massively boosted gold generation from Y=32 all the way to Y=256 — mine here if you need large quantities of gold. Nether gold ore (in the Nether) is another fast source: mine with Silk Touch and smelt for ingots, or Fortune III for gold nuggets.

Redstone Ore

Best level: Y=-58. Redstone shares the same deep-level generation pattern as diamonds — the deeper you go, the more you find, peaking at Y=-58 before bedrock interference. You will naturally find redstone while diamond mining. Fortune III significantly boosts drops (average ~6 redstone dust per ore).

Lapis Lazuli

Best level: Y=0. Lapis has a unique distribution: it peaks sharply at Y=0 (the deepslate boundary) and has a secondary smaller peak around Y=64 (sea level). Lapis is essential for enchanting (1-3 lapis per enchantment) and can be used as blue dye. Fortune III dramatically increases lapis drops — up to 32 per ore block.

Emerald Ore

Best level: Y=236 in mountain biomes. Emerald ore generates exclusively in mountain biomes (windswept hills, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, meadows) and only as single-block veins. It's the rarest overworld ore, but emeralds are easier to obtain via villager trading. Mining emerald ore is inefficient — use it only if you happen to be in mountains already.
